PROTEIN FOR BREAKFAST MELTS INCHES AWAY

It’s that time of year again – let the diets begin.  Seriously though, if you are interested in cutting calories and slimming down, skipping breakfast is the last thing you want to do.

Studies of both adults and children have shown that breakfast eater’s weigh less than those who skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast has been associated with overweight and obesity.

Participants followed by The National Weight Control Registry who had lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least one year reported eating breakfast as a key strategy for maintaining weight loss.  Of this group, 78% were regular breakfast eaters and only 4% said that they never ate breakfast. They also followed a low calorie and low fat diet.

Many of the studies linking breakfast to weight loss looked at a healthy breakfast containing protein.

A new study published by the British Journal of Nutrition found that eating more protein for breakfast leads to a greater and longer feeling of fullness if you’re looking to lose weight.

Another study by Heather Leidy, M.D. of the University of Kansas Medical Center she suggests, “that people trying to lose weight should eat more protein at breakfast to help them maintain their diet and avoid overeating.  Alternately, if most of a person’s protein is consumed at dinner, hunger is reduced at the following breakfast, which could lead to over-eating later in the day.”

The most common perception by many has been that a high carbohydrate breakfast is the best way to give the body the energy and jump-start for the day.  However, these new research findings make it clear that cultivating a habit of eating protein-good reduced fat protein, such as fat-free turkey bacon, eggs, egg whites or yogurt keeps the body full and satiated for longer.  This staves off hunger pangs that make you want to reach for those high fat and calorie-laden foods that add unnecessary pounds to your body.

If you are serious about changing your weight, reducing your caloric intake and melting those inches away, having protein for breakfast just might be the new diet you’ve been looking for.

Increasing Your Inspiration

Most of us would love to feel more inspired more often. Feeling inspired can bring passion and purpose into our lives, make us feel alive and brighten our outlook on life. So how do we become more inspired? How do we invite more inspiration into our lives?

Give this guided meditation a try.

1. Sit comfortably, take a deep breath and as you exhale close your eyes and begin to relax.

2. Allow yourself to think about moments of inspiration and creativity you’ve experienced in your life whether large or small.

3. Also think about some moments when you wish you’d felt more inspired.

4. Now, using your imagination, picture yourself as an inventor, working away in your own studio or laboratory. Imagine the space as brightly lit, and imagine feeling joyful, light and extremely intelligent.

5. Now see yourself suddenly inspired by some brilliant idea. (It doesn’t matter whether or not you can identify this idea to yourself.) Just feel the excitement you have, as you are inspired with this brilliant idea. Notice where in your body you feel the feelings and allow them to grow and spread throughout your entire body, feeling more and more excited….

6. Now imagine other people gathering around and being excited and impressed by your new idea. Imagine them shaking your hand and congratulating you. Take time to fully enjoy this experience!

7. Come back slowly and notice how inspired you feel.

Arthritis Today – Hypnosis for Pain

“Joseph Barber, PhD, a clinical professor of anesthesiology and rehabilitation at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, uses hypnosis for pain caused by arthritis

An analysis of 18 studies of hypnosis and pain with more than 900 people conducted by researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York bears out this patient’s experience, showing substantial pain relief in 75 percent of participants.”

2nd Annual Burien Wellness Fair

Come on out and meet us at the Burien Wellness Fair and receive a FREE Life Tune Up!
 
The city is sponsoring its second annual “Burien Wellness Fair,” a community health fair on Saturday, Sept. 11th, from 10am – 4pm at Burien Town Square Park, at SW 152nd Street & 5th Place SW.

Local medical service providers and other health and wellness organizations will be on hand to let the public see what services they offer.

The fair is free, and there will be a lot to see and do.  Attendees can expect to find:

  • Free medical screenings
  • Advice on preventative health care for all ages
  • Healthy cooking demonstrations
  • Give-a-ways and samples
  • Drawings for prizes at many exhibitor booths
  • Entertainment for kids
  • First 300 attendees receive a digital thermometer

In addition, the Puget Sound Blood Center will be on-site with a bloodmobile to collect donations.  If you’d like to make an appointment to donate blood, call Janet at 206-248-5508.

Burien’s 2nd annual Wellness Fair will be Saturday, Sept. 11th at Town Square Park. 

Puget Sounds Skills Center, Health Sciences and Human Services High School, and Highline Community College will also be on hand to talk to students of all ages who are interested in pursuing careers in the health care field.  They will have information on the programs available in their facilities.

Lose Weight Through Guided Meditations

Guided meditation or light hypnotic trance is a very powerful tool to help you create the changes you want to make in your life, more quickly and easily than you ever thought possible. Guided meditation-hypnosis is used very effectively for weight loss as well as for other challenging and destructive beliefs and behaviors. 

 While in a trance, your mind is open and receptive to suggestions that will support you in changing your behavior.  For example after receiving positive suggestions about healthy eating and exercise you may find yourself looking forward to these new habits and enjoying them very much while losing excess weight in the process.

 Sounds great you may be thinking, but does it really work? There are well documented studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of using hypnosis for weight loss.

One such study was conducted by David N. Bolocofsky; Dwayne Spinler; and Linda Coulthard-Morris in 1985 titled, “Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management.” The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41.

This was a 9-week study conducted on two groups of around 54 people.  The first group was treated with changes in their diet and exercise habits only.  The second group received the same treatment while also receiving hypnosis for reinforcement. After the 9 week trial both groups lost weight while in the program.  However, after the 8 month and 2 year follow up the first group did not lose any more weight and most of the participants gained back the weight they had lost. 

The second group however, continued to lose weight during both follow ups, and most of the people in this group met their long term weight loss goals. Not only that, they continued to practice the new diet and exercise habits they learned in the study.

Findings from other studies like this (including hypnosis in weight loss efforts) showed the average short-term weight loss for those not using hypnosis was 6 pounds, while those who were also treated with hypnosis lost on average 11.83 pounds.  Over the long-term the average weight loss without hypnosis was 6 pounds, however with hypnosis the average weight loss increased to 14.88 pounds

It is clear from these and other well documented studies that over time, those using hypnosis with other weight loss efforts are able to successfully achieve their weight loss goals and change their diet and exercise habits in the process.
