According to an article published by Web MD on August 25, 2011, 164 million adults will be obese by 2030.  In other words, “half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030 if current trends continue, a new report shows.”

According to Columbia University researcher, Claire Wang, PhD, approximately 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. are currently obese.  If this problem is not addressed those rates will rise.

Along with the obesity epidemic will likely be an increase in “chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and some types of cancer.”

“Our projections find that rising obesity is going to result in increases in many of these chronic diseases which are disabling and expensive to treat,” Wang said. “We have to act fast.” Wang says expenditures to treat obesity-related diseases will cost the U.S. health care system up to an extra $66 billion each year by 2030, if the projections become reality.

If, as they predict, 164 million Americans are obese by 2030, Wang says the health care burden will include:

An additional 8 million cases diabetes

6.8 million additional cases of heart disease and stroke

0.5 million cases of cancer”

Hypnotherapy keeps the weight off according to research in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology! More than 100 people completed a 9-week behavioral treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in weight reduction-but at 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the hypnosis subjects had continued to lose significant weight, while those in the behavioral-treatment-only group showed little change.

Hypnosis for Anxiety, Fears & Phobias

Hypnosis has been described as the most potent non-pharmacological relaxant known to science. As such, it is an extremely effective remedy for many ailments such as anxiety, fears and phobias.

How do we get fears and phobias? In the psychoanalytic world it is widely believed that phobias develop as a result of deeply buried early traumas. They can happen quickly, often with one event such as falling into a swimming pool as a young child and almost drowning, or watching a traumatic event such as a car accident.

Fears and phobias may also be modeled by parents and thus imitated by children. Also this behavior may be reinforced and rewarded causing it to remain unchanged.

The effects of these events can become hidden and repressed by the subconscious mind all the while influencing our thought and behavior. This results in exhibiting unexplainable anxieties, fears and phobias which negatively impact and limit our life experiences.

In the field of medical research, phobias are believed to be a physiological disorder resulting in the inappropriate triggering of anxiety responses.

Medical professionals commonly treat anxieties and phobias with drugs such as Xanax, Atenol, Valium,Lexapro, Paxil, Sinequan, Stelazine or others. Chemotherapy drugs are also prescribed to reduce the anxiety. These drugs include beta-blockers that block the anxiety pathways so the patient does not have to experience the anxiety caused by fears and phobias.

Using medication is a temporary fix for these conditions, not a cure. Once you stop taking them, unless you addressed the underlying cause, the symptoms return. And often there are unwanted side effects in taking these drugs such as those listed below.

Drowsiness, Lack of Energy, Clumsiness, Slow Reflexes, Slurred Speech, Confusion and Disorientation, Depression, Dizziness, Lightheadedness, Impaired Thinking and Judgment, Memory Loss, Forgetfulness, Nausea, Stomach Upset, Blurred or Double Vision

In hypnosis we use effective techniques to eliminate fears, phobias and anxiety and the only side effect is the elimination of the unwanted experience these feelings produce.

These techniques often provide immediate results. For example after utilizing specific techniques with a client with agoraphobia for two hours they were able to leave their house the next day while feeling more and more confident and comfortable in open spaces.

Lose Weight Through Guided Meditations

Guided meditation or light hypnotic trance is a very powerful tool to help you create the changes you want to make in your life, more quickly and easily than you ever thought possible. Guided meditation-hypnosis is used very effectively for weight loss as well as for other challenging and destructive beliefs and behaviors. 

 While in a trance, your mind is open and receptive to suggestions that will support you in changing your behavior.  For example after receiving positive suggestions about healthy eating and exercise you may find yourself looking forward to these new habits and enjoying them very much while losing excess weight in the process.

 Sounds great you may be thinking, but does it really work? There are well documented studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of using hypnosis for weight loss.

One such study was conducted by David N. Bolocofsky; Dwayne Spinler; and Linda Coulthard-Morris in 1985 titled, “Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management.” The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41.

This was a 9-week study conducted on two groups of around 54 people.  The first group was treated with changes in their diet and exercise habits only.  The second group received the same treatment while also receiving hypnosis for reinforcement. After the 9 week trial both groups lost weight while in the program.  However, after the 8 month and 2 year follow up the first group did not lose any more weight and most of the participants gained back the weight they had lost. 

The second group however, continued to lose weight during both follow ups, and most of the people in this group met their long term weight loss goals. Not only that, they continued to practice the new diet and exercise habits they learned in the study.

Findings from other studies like this (including hypnosis in weight loss efforts) showed the average short-term weight loss for those not using hypnosis was 6 pounds, while those who were also treated with hypnosis lost on average 11.83 pounds.  Over the long-term the average weight loss without hypnosis was 6 pounds, however with hypnosis the average weight loss increased to 14.88 pounds

It is clear from these and other well documented studies that over time, those using hypnosis with other weight loss efforts are able to successfully achieve their weight loss goals and change their diet and exercise habits in the process.
